Over the past fifteen years, demand for vapor-permeable membranes has grown significantly, leading to the emergence of numerous new suppliers offering a variety of membranes and technological solutions in this market.
Today, breathable roof membranes play a particularly important role in the sealing of pitched roofs and wall structures: they ensure adequate wind protection, vapor permeability, and waterproofing. However, for long-term investment protection, it is important to choose reliable products that will remain effective throughout their entire service life. Even a single leaky membrane can damage the entire roof structure and make the building vulnerable to water damage.
For this reason, specialists are increasingly turning to proven brands such as DuPont™ Tyvek®.

Functional layers: why thickness and quality matter
The thickness and quality of the functional layer directly determine the durability of the film and its ability to effectively remove water. DuPont™ Tyvek® functional layers are approximately 6-8 times thicker than the most commonly used microporous multilayer membranes, ensuring long-term durability and reliable protection.
Film aging and resistance to environmental factors
The main factors determining the durability of films are resistance to UV radiation and high temperatures.
- UV exposure: Breathable membranes left uncovered for long periods of time can be damaged by UV rays.
- High temperatures: Metal roof coverings heat up more, putting membranes at greater risk of losing their water impermeability.
Tyvek® advantage over multi-layer membranes
Independent Swedish technical research institute SP conducted aging tests that showed that DuPont™ Tyvek® breathable membranes are far superior to conventional multi-layer membranes. Even when exposed to direct UV rays and high temperatures, Tyvek® films maintain effective water protection for many years.
All tests were performed in accordance with EN 13859, and the water resistance of the films remained in accordance with class W1. Tyvek® products showed greater durability and high resistance to UV rays, as well as maintaining water resistance at a temperature of 90 °C (above the CE requirement of 70 °C).
Reliable protection against condensation
Due to the thick and durable properties of the functional layer, Tyvek® membranes provide long-term protection against water penetration, wind exposure, and condensation. They protect surfaces and structures more effectively than multi-layer breathable membranes.
By combining Tyvek® and AirGuard® products, you can create highly energy-efficient structures that will remain durable and functional for many years.
